Wedding day with Fujifilm X-E1

Once again, I push my Fujifilm X-E1 limit by using it for a wedding day assignment. Previously, I push it for a concert shoot. It did have some issue but I did get the job done.A wedding shoot is a different scenario where it will put Fuji X-E1 to a test. There are already numbers of people using Fuji X Series camera for wedding especially the new generation Fujifilm X series such as Fuji X-T1 that has better and faster operation power. Somehow, Fuji X-E1 is still the slower generation of Fujifilm X Series where not much people have confident to use it as main camera in a fast pace photo shoot such as wedding actual day. Wedding actual day are not sport shooting but they event are quite fast and moving around even more compare to portrait photo shoot or even concert shoot. Anyway, this post will be where I share my idea, experiance and some problem I faced along the shoot. Anyway the entire wedding actual day is done with Fuji X-E1, Fujinon XF 35mm, Fujinon 18 - 55 and Helios 44m 58mm 2.0.

Firstly, lets start with how the autofocus handle along the entire day. As usual, the autofocus is not fast and they do hunt from time to time. The Fujinon XF 18 - 55 do focus faster then the Fujinon 35mm and the Fujinon 35mm hunt more from time to time. That is already the fact of how the camera works. So in order to solve this problem, I have to think of something to solve this problem. So once again, I shoot in manual focus and zone focus. Shooting in manual can be a slow process but using zone focusing, the entire process will be different. Zone focusing can also be done differently on Fuji X-E1 because Fuji X-E1 allow us to auto focus by using the AF button.(of course this will not work with Helios 58mm since it can only be operate in manual focus) Then with the help of the peaking, it will improve the speed of getting to the focus lock ( I am still hoping for colour peaking to come to Fujifilm X-E1, please Fujifilm)  to the desired zone, then wait for the moment to happen. To understand the easier, I would say using the other faster system will be like using machine gun, raise, aim and shoot but using Fuji X-E1 will be like using a sniper, where we aim, wait and shoot when it happens. You will get less shoot but you will get the job done properly if the photographer shoot at the right moment.

Next, to used this method, you need to know where to aim, what and who to photograph. You need to have a clear vision and visualize the shot you want to get and the moment you want to captured. This is when experience come into play. With experience, you will know what to expect . you will have more idea of what is happening and what is going to happen. You are more prepare for it. But the problem is I do not possess such experience hence. So one way to solve it will be check out more wedding photo and start visualize and imagine then be ready for it :).

Next issue with my Fuji X-E1 will be the battery life. The battery life of fuji X-E1 are not as good as DSLR battery life hence you need to prepare more batteries. Furthermore, Wedding actual day are actually a long event. It is divided into morning session and also night session but both my batteries was drain out in the morning session. So I believe we should at least have 4 batteries for smooth actual day photo shoot but I think 6 batteries will be much better,so get more batteries.

Lastly, I would like to say that the experience of using Fuji X-E1 are actually very  pleasant due to the size and weight. Fuji X-E1 are light and flexible and this is definitely a good thing especially when it is actually a long event. The flexibility definitely allow the user to move around easier and get the photos from different angle yet do not burn out the photographer hands or leg.

So this is some of the issues I stumble upon on that day. At the end of the day, the most important things is to get the job done and successfully captured the beautiful moment along the wedding day. Of course, along the entire shoot, I do hope I can have the faster sibling of Fuji X-E 1 which is Fuji X-T1. The autofocus speed, the big viewfinder and also the writing speed are also something i wish for but I believe I actually think and learn more from using Fujifilm X-E1 that is something very important.
Anyway, a photo is worth a thousand words, so enjoy part of the photos of this happy wedding and wish they will be stay happy and lovely always and forever.

Hence, that is all for this post hope you enjoy and again,
Happy always to this couple

  1. Hi Meng,

Great shots as usual! You're really making the most out of that X-E1. Congratulations on the new XF 18-55mm purchase! I know we've talked about that lens for quite some time; how do you like it?

    Take care,

    Patrick

    1. Hi Partick,
Welcome back :)...thanks,yeah we did discuss it quite alot, to my surprise,i am actually quite used to the 35mm prime and use it more than the 18 - 55. Maybe is because of the 1.4 factor and the simplification of one focal length or I am just used to it....sometime i do wish it is a little wider like a 24mm maybe...but then this lens definitely focus faster then the 35mm and the stabilization work like a charm, definitely good for event and flexibility...need more time to work with it :)
      Great day ahead

    2. Hi Meng,

That's great to hear...well you know Fuji is coming out with a wide angle F1.4 lens soon I believe. It's a 24mm equivalent to I think. Did you hear about that? I hope your summer is going well!

      Best regards,

      Patrick
